How long do home and personal data removal requests take? Real timelines by site type

Updated September 9, 2026 · by HomeCloak

"How long will this take?" has a legal answer and a practical one. The legal answer is 45 days: that's the window state privacy laws give a business to act on a verified request, and a business can extend it once. The practical answer depends on which kind of site you're dealing with.

People-search sites: days to three weeks

Sites with a dedicated privacy inbox (Spokeo, Whitepages, Radaris, most of the mid-tier) usually acknowledge within a day or two and confirm removal within one to three weeks. Sites that route requests through a ticket system add a reply or two, especially if they ask for identity or agent verification first. A small number sit silent until the 45-day mark.

Listing sites: immediate to a month

Owner-claim flows (Zillow, Redfin's owner dashboard) act as soon as you're verified. Sites that take written requests (Realtor.com, Homes.com, Movoto, RealtyTrac) typically respond within two to four weeks.

The MLS: depends on the agent

The listing agent can restrict photos on a closed listing in minutes. The variable is how quickly they respond to you. Syndicated sites then pick up the change on their next feed refresh, anywhere from a day to a few weeks.

Street-imagery blurs: two to six weeks

Google usually applies a blur within a few weeks, and Apple is similar. Bing is the least predictable and rarely confirms. None of the three reliably tells you when it's done, so checking the imagery yourself (or having it checked automatically at 3 and 6 months) is the only way to know.

Why it isn't over when it's over

People-search sites re-import from public records and purchased data on a rolling schedule. A record that was removed in March can reappear in September. Listing photos occasionally return after a feed re-sync. Plan on a re-check at six months, or use monitoring that re-files automatically when something comes back.

Common questions

What if a site never replies?

After 45 days, re-send the request and note the date of the original. If your state has a privacy law, a complaint to the attorney general or privacy agency is the next step. HomeCloak re-sends unanswered requests automatically for monitored properties.

Does paying speed it up?

No site charges for removal or offers a faster paid lane. What a paid service buys you is that every request is filed correctly the first time, replies are read and acted on, and re-files happen without you remembering to check.

Will I get a confirmation?

Most sites send one by email. Some just quietly remove the record. That's why checking the site itself matters more than waiting for a confirmation.
